Ever wonder why background checks are important? Background checks help with screening out bad candidates. Some employers think they are a hassle, not worth the money; but what if you could weed out a potential employee who recently cost another business over 2200 LOST HOURS? A recent case in California involves an employee, the DMV, and over $40,000 in lost wages.

This particular employee had a nasty habit of sleeping at their desk. One may forgive a small nap of five minutes or so, but not three to four hours a day. EVERY DAY…FOR THREE YEARS!!! Of course, things at the DMV tend to take time, so it’s only natural this case took THREE YEARS before anyone thought it may be a problem! While a background check might not show this type of behavior, it would raise the question of how and why an applicant could be fired from the DMV.

Thankfully, Blueline has your back throughout the entire screening process (platform-process-data-reporting-disclosures) and across all states and jurisdictions. Screening Out Bad Candidates will save you money in the long run. So if you find yourself questioning whether a background check is “worth it,” ask yourself if you can afford over $40,000 with nothing to show for it.

It’s been a minute since we’ve shared an #EmployeeFromHell story.

Although it seems that this employee probably didn’t mean any harm and was just goofing off… it certainly has caused some backlash for Wendy’s and cost this young man his job. Mixed reviews have been popping up all over social media about the viral video of a Milton Florida Wendy’s employee bathing in their restaurant sink. A few of the responses have even gotten a bit frosty.

The 90-second video was originally posted to Snapchat last month, then later reposted to Facebook with the comment, “I don’t suggest anyone eating at the Milton Wendy’s again.” The video currently has over 1 million views.

i don’t suggest anyone eating at the milton wendy’s again ???
Posted by Haley Leach on Tuesday, May 21, 2019

Viral Wendy’s Bath Video

In the video, you can see a young man hopping into the large kitchen sink that is filled with soap and water. His fellow co-workers stand around laughing and filming the scene.

Mike Johnson, who owns this Wendy’s franchise, gave a statement to Pensacola News Journal, “We are taking this incident seriously and it is obviously totally unacceptable. This was a prank by a person who no longer works at this restaurant, and who clearly did not use good judgement. We are taking this opportunity to reinforce our very strict quality procedures with our restaurant team.”

This prank follows a similar video that was posted in 2008 on MySpace of a Burger King employee in Ohio doing the exact same stunt.

Both inspectors from the Department of Business and Professional Regulation visited this Wendy’s location after the incident. The Wendy’s restaurant was able to pass the inspection.

Social media users have been born between being outraged and defending the young man in the video.

“At least he had a pair of shorts on and it is a kitchen skin. I washed my babies in my kitchen skin. I don’t eat out of the sink. So what is the problem,” one Facebook user commented in defense of the incident.

Another more frosty comment stated, “This makes you wonder what else is going on at that restaurant, someone needs to get fired, the sink needs to be sanitized!”

Everyone has to deal with the occasional #EmployeeFromHell… but some employees get a little more crazy than others. Luckily, employment screening can help you avoid some of these nightmares, but while we’re grateful these stories aren’t happening at our office, they sure are fun to read…

1. Harboring Rocks

I share an office space with a woman who’s been working in our firm for 35 years now. Underneath her desk she has a banker’s box half-filled—at least 10 kilos—with colorful rocks.

One day, I asked her about the rocks. She said, “Oh every time someone reeeaaaally pisses me off, they get a rock put in my box so I can remember it.”
“You mean…. all of those rocks represent somebody?”

She rummaged in the box for a second and pulled one out. “This is for the time [the department secretary] didn’t invite me to her Christmas party, even though I gave her a present.”

I picked one out at random. “So… who is this for?”
“That’s for [our old boss, retired circa 2003]. I told her not to hire that [racial slur] for accounting and she got pregnant six months later. She should have listened to me.”

I stared. “So… do I have any rocks?”
She just glowered at me for a second and then turned back to her newspaper.

This story has us seriously questioning every item any co-worker has sitting at their desk…

2. Completely Postal

We were working for a telecom company and were part of a team that specialized in a specific type of product, so there were only 7 of us crammed into a small room in the back.

There was this one guy on the team that would say weird, sexist quotes from the Bible frequently. He also told us how he refused to let his wife work… even though we only made about $12/hr at the time. But up until this point the craziest thing he had done was take off on June 6, 2006 (666) to hide in his bunker.

Then one day he was served a protective order against his wife and daughter along with divorce papers all in the same day… that is when the true craziness began.

He started spending all day talking on the phone to lawyers and family members. He would either quote even darker Bible verses and wish his soon to be ex-wife was dead or complain about not getting sex anymore. He started saying that God “takes care” of [promiscuous women] like his ex-wife (ominous) and just doing things in general that would kind of freak us out.

Well, this all came to a head over striped socks. It was a typical morning and he was on the phone [complaining] to someone when a girl came in wearing striped socks. We kinda laughed about it and were joking around with her when suddenly this guy SLAMS his phone down and yells, “OH GREAT, BECAUSE YOU ALL WERE LAUGHING IN THE BACKGROUND THE JUDGE DENIED MY VISITATION WITH MY DAUGHTER!!!!”

Another lady in our office replied with the comment, “Jeez Jeff, don’t go postal.”

To which he replied, in the flattest, coldest tone I’ve ever heard in real life, “Oh I won’t go postal. God will kill you all…. [along with some more graphic descriptions of their death we didn’t feel comfortable sharing here]”

But if that story doesn’t make you grateful that you don’t work with ‘Postal Jeff’, then you might need to consider a job change. Or at least propose a new employment screening system to your boss.

3. Walkie-Talkie Felony

When I was sixteen, I worked at Wendy’s. One day I went in to find out that I was training a new employee. As I’m training her, she starts filing me in on her situation. She was a recovering crack addict who had just been released from jail for theft and was living in a halfway house. She was also forty hears old and kept hitting on me and telling me how cute I was, etc. (again 16 years old). So I thought I would have to get a new job (to avoid her). But two days later, addiction won out and she ran out the door with a hundred bucks. The funny thing was, had it just been the money, she would have just been fired. But because she ran out with the work walkie-talkie, she ended up being charged with a felony.

We’re feeling a little more grateful for our own jobs right about now. But if you feel you can relate, please share any stories you have of your own crazy co-workers/employees for us to share as a part of our #EmployeeFromHell thread! Leave the story in the comments below or email us at msmith@blueline-services.com.

We’ve all had to deal with our own handful of office mishaps or #EmployeesFromHell, but wait until you read some of these stories that were shared on The Ladders job search platform blog by Monica Torres. We’ve shared some of them here to help your day go by a little faster. Comment below with any of your own office mishaps or #EmployeeFromHell stories and we’ll feature you!

1) A SPELLCHECK SUGGESTION GONE WRONG

Weldon Adams told CBS a cautionary tale about why you should always check what your spellcheck automates. Adams was working in a buttoned-up office as a Certified Public Accountant when he needed to apologize to a big client about the delays in processing. Except in his rush to write the email, he misspelled “inconvenience.” Spellcheck helpfully offered a word suggestion of what it thought he was trying to write.

“I clicked accept without double-checking. And I ended up sending the client an email saying that I ‘apologize for any incontinence,’” Adams said.

Sorry for my inconvenience!

2) THE WRONG DRESS CODE MEMO

Dressing up for Halloween only works when everyone joins you, as one employee who dressed as Star Wars‘ Darth Vader to work found out.

“I went to our meeting room, threw open the door, and marched in with this loud dramatic music,” the BuzzFeed community member, meigana wrote. “Only to realize my meeting had been moved to another room and another department of very serious people I didn’t know were staring at me like I was insane.”

Cue the Darth Vader scene: Nooooooooooooooooooo!

3) A TOILET PAPER ROLL THAT STUCK

Spencer told Business Insider that when he was working as a dishwasher at a for a popular Italian restaurant, he experienced one of the most embarrassing moments of his life. After returning from the bathroom on one of his breaks, he noticed that people were laughing and whispering at him.

“Eventually, I came to the realization that I had a string of toilet paper flapping out of the rear of my pants the entire time. It was so long that it was literally dragging on the ground behind me,” he said. “That was when I first started, too, and so the other workers never let me live it down. I continued to work there for another two years.”

Workplace shame is your co-workers never forgetting who you used to be.

4) THE SICK CO-WORKER WHO REFUSES TO GO HOME

“Currently working with a person who has had a sinus infection since November 2016. That’s right: wet, chunky coughs, nine hours a day, five days a week, for going on ten months,” Reddit user 84th_legislature wrote. “She does not leave the team area for coughing attacks, she just retches up whatever it is and gulps it back down.”

Although the Redditor noted that their workplace was “very flexible with working from home for people with health issues,” the sick co-worker refused to see a doctor or work remotely. Loud coughing is the kind of mundane yet annoying background noise that drives many an employee up the wall.

5) THE PICKY BOSS WITH A SPECIFIC REQUEST

Andrea Meno told Cracked.com that her manager “used to tell us to wear specific colors on specific days. There was no reason for it. It was just so that she knew we were ‘listening.’” This request is one of those nitpicky demands that show a lack of trust in one’s team, and is an everyday nightmare many of us experience.

Are your employees showing up to work high?

If they are, it looks like you’re not alone. A study conducted in 2014 found that nearly 1 in 10 Americans were showing up to work high on marijuana.

Most work places have a zero-tolerance drug policy. And for good reason too.

Ever wondered what a brain high on marijuana looks like?

The video found above from life hacker does a pretty good job at laying it out clearly.

Given the effects it has on the brain, having routine company drug testing doesn’t seem like all that bad of an idea.

Having a drug-free work environment has helped employers see a decrease in workplace accidents, employee mistakes, absenteeism, employee turnover, and in their workers’ compensation claims. Other benefits are less tangible, such as improved workplace environment, employee morale and customer satisfaction.

We sure wouldn’t want to be one of the people working under this #EmployeeFromHell!! Here’s another story of an employee that got a little power hungry.

Brutal Betty

“The company I worked for made home furnishings.

The person who was in charge of us, whom I will call Betty, was a really nice woman when we were outside the office.

Inside, she was brutal. She would yell at people all the time and was never, ever, wrong.

She said you could never throw out any food from lunch that you didn’t plan to eat unless you asked her if she wanted it first. Otherwise she would actually go into the garbage and fish it out to see if she wanted to eat it.

One day, she tripped over an extension cord, fell, and broke her hip. As she lay there, screaming in pain (which I can’t fault her for too much, that’s gotta be painful), we called an ambulance.

Just as the EMT’s show up, Betty noticed some dirt on the floor. So she yells at one of my coworkers, Steve, to clean it up. He says, “No problem. I’ll get a broom” and she responds with, “No. Use your hands.”

The EMT leaned over next me and asked, “Did you guys push her?”

So everyone was super excited because we thought it would be Betty’s last day at work. The reign of terror would be over.

But nope. She was back 3 weeks later, with her leg propped up on a chair and one of those little poles with the plastic robot claw on the end. So when people would walk past her, she could reach out and grab them with it.”

This story was found on Reddit and edited for length and clarity.

We’ve all had to deal with the occasional #EmployeeFromHell, but what happens when that employee is your superior??

We searched through todayatwork.com to find some crazy and funny firing stories. Please enjoy them and we hope they make you feel slightly better about your own job (if they don’t, let’s maybe consider going job hunting). As always, we’d love to hear some of your own stories to feature on our site so please leave them in the comments below!

Fired Over a Screensaver

Today I was threatened with being fired for not having a screensaver running on my computer!

I have tried numerous times to run a screensaver but for some reason they don’t stay running while I’m away. I even had an app running that tries to blacks out the screen, but when the room is dark the screen didn’t look 100% black. It was dark with a bit of a glow still.

Anyway because it wasn’t a screen “saver”, my boss thinks the screen will be damaged and it may get an image burned into it. Even though there was no image displaying! Just a gray glow.

And this he decided was a good enough reason to threaten my job!

I argued that there would be even more light with a screen saver and that the fear of “burn-in” is from the old CRT screen days so it’s not even applicable to modern computers. I’m using an iMac with an integrated display!

We settled on me shutting down the computer every time I leave it, but I still can’t believe I almost got fired for my computer not being able to run a screensaver!

Sidework

I have worked in restaurants for a very long time and it is always amusing to tease the new people.

I would train them to do the dumbest things like empty the hot water from our coffee machine that was connected to the tap. Then watch them hopelessly pour out pitcher after pitcher of hot water.

Or I’d tell them to go outside and into the cellar to get more napkins and laugh hysterically while they wandered around the building looking for the cellar door.

The best though was this sweet girl named Jess who I made rewind the fans at the end of her shift with a broom stick. I told her each fan had be rewound 57 times before we closed so that they would work the next day.

Unfortunately I was fired for making her do this. I didn’t know she was the manager’s niece!

Do you have any crazy firing stories?? If so, leave a comment below!

We all know things around the office can get crazy sometimes, some people are unpredictable.

(Which is why it’s best to make sure your company does a thorough screening of its employees. It saves us all from pulling our hair out. Seriously, that no hair look works for some people, but we want you to keep yours. — so please click on our links above!)

But we found some crazy stories about coworkers dating on Reddit that turned some normal coworkers into an #EmployeeFromHell. Check them out and share your own crazy stories in the comments below for us to post!

Better than speed-dating:

“Where I work, [things get messy with dating]. It’s a seasonal job with a bunch of high school kids about to head into college and a bunch of college kids just trying to make some money over the summer. Everyone dates everyone and then cheats on them with someone else. When it comes time for promotions, we legitimately have to consider who has [dated] who and how that will affect morale and the team. Like, ‘Well, Jane really kicked a– last summer, but she also had that horrible breakup with Jack, and while I think Jack would be fine if we promoted her, Jane might have major issues working with him. Not to mention they both slept with John from maintenance. [It becomes kind of a nightmare]”

Not to mention a bit of logistical headache!

My ice cream > your ice cream:

“I dated a girl I worked with at Coldstone Creamery. I was a new hire, she had been there a couple years. We dated for about three months, then I, as civilly as possibly, broke it off between us. Just wasn’t working out, but I was hoping we’d still be professional about it at work. Well she’s good friends with the manager, and threatens to quit unless they fire me because she no longer feels comfortable with me working at the store. So the manager politely asked me to quit, I did, and then worked at the Marble Slab almost directly across the street. Their ice cream was better than Coldstone anyway.”

Lovers to arch-icecream-enemies. It’s never easy to stay friends afterwards anyway.

Then again, it doesn’t always end badly:

A fast-food Romeo and Juliet:

“I met my boyfriend at Wendy’s. It was awesome. Meeting in the freezer for kisses, winking at each other and just generally stealing glances at each other … we could’ve both been fired, so it felt a lot like a less-romantic, less-dramatic, fast-food version of Romeo and Juliet.”

Their coworkers and boss might not have been too happy with their secret freezer meetings though.

We’d love to hear from you! Share your own in the comments below!!

With Halloween just around the corner, it’s everyone’s favorite time for all things spooky and haunted. Scary movies, spooky costumes and haunted houses are all part of the Halloween fun.

But what happens when that scare factor becomes a little too real?

At the beginning of this month a woman in Omaha, Nebraska reported that an employee at haunted house ‘Mystery Manor’ assaulted her –grabbing and smashing her head onto a table inside the haunted house.

The victim, 23, said that while it was against the rules to touch her, the employee ran his fingers through her hair and pinned her up against a wall to separate her from her group before slamming her head down.

“I was terrified. I just wanted to get out. I couldn’t talk. I didn’t have a voice. I was shaking,” Nikki said in an interview with the local news station.

The employee then followed Nikki and her friends out into the parking lot to their car.

There Nikki recalls he threatened her saying, “you’re lucky I didn’t drive you off by your pretty little cowgirl boots. I kidnap little girls like you.”

Nikki said the employee finally retreated back to the haunted house when she threatened to take a photo of him.

While the haunted house said that they do not allow actors to touch patrons at Mystery Manor, the managers themselves are not in there walking through with their actors.

“It makes me question if they do background checks,” said Nikki. “I wonder if they really know who is working for them because this man touched me and it wasn’t allowed, and I had a feeling he knew it wasn’t allowed.”

This is not the first or only case of people being assaulted by haunted house employees this year.

Nearly every year similar reports are made concerning haunted house actors, yet many haunted houses continue to not require background checks for their employees.

Some things to consider to keep this from happening to you:

Call ahead and ask about their hiring policy for employees or if employees are required to go through a background check

Ask about the rules for employees: if they are allowed to touch you, separate you from your group, etc.

Stay with your group
